Independent Editor Spends Night On The Beat With Harvey County Deputies

Posted 5/23/2013

By Karen Jacobs

HARVEY COUNTY – What does a deputy sheriff do while they are on duty?

That depends on the night and last week I got to observe what a Friday night on the beat is like. With the help of Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton and other officers, I was able to set up a ride along with Sergeant Scott Motes and Deputy Colt Pfautz last Friday.

I started out the evening with Sergeant Motes at 8 p.m.  We made our way to the station, only to quickly be out on the road to locate a reported reckless driver.

It turned out the reporting party had lost sight of the driver and we were unable to locate the vehicle.

Quickly, another call came in, taking us to check on a person reported to be walking along a railroad in the country. We saw a person running down the road, and after stopping the individual, it was found that he had an outstanding warrant and he was arrested.

On our way back to Newton, we assisted with a driver who was unable to maintain his lane of traffic. The driver had a suspended license and was arrested.

In an hour we had two arrests.

Motes said I may have picked a busy night to ride along. He said when the weather warms up people start to get out and many are drinking, which leads to problems. He said the seasons and weather affects how busy deputies are on patrol.

He said Friday night people had spring fever and when it’s nice, they are ready to get out of the house. He said winter can be bad, too, as people are cooped up in the house because of the cold and tempers start to flair.
